Aged Pu’er, ancient history, and knowing your audience with Dr. Felege Yirga
We’re in Tennessee for a special episode of Teatime with Jesse with polyglot and historian Dr. Felege Yirga.
Jesse and Felege reminisce about their iconic game nights while sipping Pu'er and Jasmine tea. Dive into the fascinating world of ancient cultures as we explore the Late Antique/Early Medieval periods of the Near East and Red Sea regions. Felege discusses how cultural shifts impact the recording of history, while Jesse draws some parallels between stand-up comedy and teaching history.

Charcoal Roasted Tea and Growing up on a Tea Farm [Teatime with Jesse Ep - 6]
I choked on my drink while watching this. Almost died laughing.
JESSE. THIS IS MY FAVORITE WHITE TEA SO FAR. THE FRAGRANCE IS AMAZING BROTHER THE ORANGE PEEL IS NEXT LEVEL. THE FLAVOR MAKES AWESOME COLD BREW AFTERWARDS AS WELL
First out of all subscribers .
I can’t imagine how disappointed you must have felt not being able to go back. But it’s so great to see someone build something out of an uncontrollable sudden 90 degree turn. It’s very inspiring! And now I have a tea guy!
Bless 🙏
The tea is certainly good, although I wish you would include samples like other tea companies, a little 5g baggie in an order goes a long way and will usually convince me to try other stuff in your shop when I return.
That's awesome! Thanks for showing that!
@NileRed would love this
Haha 🤣 You are a BAMF Jesse! Keep up the funny videos and thanks for helping me get into such tasty teas 🍵
Ah, yes, the singular asian culture that exists singularly across the entire continent.
Nice
Ah yes with a name including Jesus christ in it you're allowed to be judge mental yes yes makes the sence
All I know is I’m 67 and I drink tea from little cups and love it.
Take out that ice cube and there’s nothing in the glass
I always had this interesting magnetic draw towards the tea and tea ceremony of Asian culture it's so important and I don't know why but I would love to get the experience that you have with it
Gong-fu cha isn't exactly a ceremony, it's more a method. It isn't as strict or codified as Japanese chadō (The Tea Ceremony) and is more like making cocktails than it is a ceremony. Some things are old traditions like tea pets, other items are for certain methods of tea preparation like different brewing vessels.
My dude is a learned cultural appreciator and anyone who spends enough time on his channel would know that. Keep being awesome, man
Everyone writing comments trying to besmirch Asians for their historical use of opium conveniently neglect to recognize that people like John Jacob Astor became a multimillionaire fueling an addiction. America instigated the Opium Wars. That’s one of the prime reasons Japan increasingly harbored resentment leveled at the US in the late 1930s. This, the rampant Christian missionary crusading and their wrongful involvement in the Boxer Rebellion.
Shit on ‘em Jesse!
"gee-whizz...I guess there's only ONE way you can know if I'm some arrogant white guy appropriating culture OR a tea loving student of culture... Link is in my bio..." 😂 That is the most solid example of your comedic skill! You owned that commenter WHILE plugging your store! Bravo! 👍
I read that comment as "gonna play both sides" meaning they were going to play to the "moral outrage" crowd with "caucasian man telling us about tea culture" and "go on" being an invitation for you to continue, playing to the "other side". I think if they were telling you to go on sarcastically they would have said "go off". But that said I'm learning a language as well and getting a lot into the culture of it. As I learn more there's more I can share with others and more that I can participate in the culture I have been falling in love with since learning the language. That genuine kind of interest and curiousity is not cultural appropriation - it is cultural appreciation and acceptance. Everyone I've met along the way has been very supportive and happy that I've been so interested in their language and culture. Granted in your case you are certainly running a business and making money off of your work. But, so do the partners you work with in China who benefit from the relationship as well. And your approach to tea has been to spotlight and support Chinese tea culture and its key players. This is in stark contrast to how tea became a culture in Britain, where it grew out of a "ah this thing they have in the east is nice, let's just take it" colonial mentality. It would be nice to see you highlight Chinese folks on RUclips who make content about tea accessible to your audience's English-speaking demographic. That I would love to see!
He is chinese, he lives and works there. Your "race" also doesnt give you more knowledge about an topic of any Kind. You also wouldnt tell an native american accordion Player to Highlight ethnic europeans because of their inherent accordion abilties.
Hey Jesse, does the dongfang mei ren get even better with age? Or is that a tea which is best drank fresh with each year’s crop?
And that’s the tea sis
I absolutely love your teas and the only place I get them from is you. I've tried other curated boxes, but you can definitely tell there's a quality difference between yours and theirs and yours will always reign supreme
Some people don’t understand the difference between appropriation and appreciation, one time for class I was going to make ancient nian gao because I found the history and myth around it fascinating and my teacher shut me down saying it’s appropriation before I could even explain my project. If I said I invented it, didn’t do any research and just tried to market it as my own thing that’s appropriation but I was wanting to share something I liked and did research on out of appreciation for that thing and the culture around it. (Also all the nian gao puns haha, cake for nian, new year cake, also how I talk allot and there’s several myths about it quieting people) When people can’t see the line between them I feel like it discourages people to do intercultural exchange which is a key human thing and how we innovate, I think it would be more rude to stick your head in the sand and not partake in other cultures because then your isolating your views and understanding of others. Just be respectful and learn from others and they’ll learn from you the same, then we can combine together the best attributes of each other and get something great. ALSO you speak the language fluently and LIVED there haha you have first hand experience, you’re one of the most respectful people I’ve seen on RUclips and an excellent ambassador
Your story is nuts... that must have been expremely embarassing. Your teacher should be ashamed of themselves. Nothing about what you were talking about was even close to appropriation. When did this happen to you?
Your teacher is an imbec!le, and should have their license taken. I'm with Wilbur, up there- This whole story is ridiculous. I'd be very pleased to see that kind of enthusiasm in one of my students. That would have been the antithesis of 'appropriation', almost. Man... I'm so sorry that happened to you.
💚
This is so awesome. Congratulations Jesse! 🎉🎉🎉
ah yes, asian culture, the culture of all asians, a singular unified ethnic monolith, a hive mind of tea
Worse would only be “oriental culture” 😅🤣
Meanwhile Japanese green tea couldn't be any more different than Chinese green.
Isn't Japanese matcha like the older version of how tea is consumed
You should reshare this one every week, as far as I'm concerned. People need to learn this lesson. Well done, brother Jesse. 👍👍
They're not worth that much effort. Making the video once though, totally worth it
@@Draaza That's why I said 'reshare'. This is the second time he's posted this specific video.
@@TheShurikenZone Reshare sure, but repost would be a poor idea, the algorithm will destroy him - it expects you to keep up activity, but it also penalises you for producing low view counts, which reposts usually do generate less
@@Draaza Yeah, but... I initially said 'reshare'... which makes this whole conversation obsolete... doesn't it?
@@TheShurikenZone I had no idea RUclips had a "Reshare" system for creators, so I assumed you used the wrong term
Hi Jesse! Love your videos! I do have a question on your familiarity with other tea drinking methods/styles that weren't gongfu cha? If not, that's alright!
Any recommendations on teas to buy to squirrel away or store that improve with age?
The bird is upset because of the inflation. 🥁
That’s so awesome
Tea pet content 🔥🥵 like who can’t love and laugh to the cute little puff
Dude, you don't talk enough about your comedy
I agree, I’m super interested in how Chinese comedy works and Jesse’s take on how it differs from comedy here in the states.
that string is a spider web that got crust on. Don't lie.
Very true my fathers side his native language some words are said the same but have different meanings kinda hard to explain tbh but true
Alot of caffeine junkies there...
The irony in the title here: China uses Celcius. Universally 😂
I'm seminole and in oklahoma we speak creek, but in Florida it's micosukee. They're real tough too.
You do have "blue" tea if you have oolong!
I want to know so much more and I hope that there are teachers who want to share regardless of one's origin. 🙇♀️
